- Reference texts
- Scientific papers published on national and international journals, available on Unistudium
- Educational objectives
- D1 - KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ABILITY
The student has to:
• understand the principles of the pathophysiology of the gastrointestinal system in small and large animals;
• be familiar with gastrointestinal diseases and possible differential diagnoses based on clinical symptoms;
• be able to establish a diagnostic and therapeutic plan;
• have knowledge of laboratory and instrumental techniques applicable to the gastrointestinal system.
D2 - ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the training activity, the student must:
• have acquired the ability to manage the main gastroenteric diseases in small and large animals.
D3 - AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT
At the end of the training activity, the student should be able to:
• correctly interpret clinical signs;
• design a diagnostic plan, appropriately integrating endoscopic examination into the diagnostic workflow;
• interpret the results of ancillary investigations for therapeutic and prognostic purposes.
D4 - COMMUNICATION SKILLS
At the end of the training activity, the student should be able to communicate effectively with referring colleagues and with owners/handlers regarding the ongoing condition.
D5 - LEARNING SKILLS
At the end of the training activity, the student should be able to:
• consult and understand scientific texts, including innovative publications, literature updates, and case reports that involve gastroenterological aspects and endoscopic diagnostics applied to the gastrointestinal system. - Prerequisites
- In order to understand and to apply the procedures required in this course, it is necessary to have passed the exams of Special Pathology and Veterinary Medical Clinic I.
- Teaching methods
- Day 1: Discussion of theoretical and practical principles related to gastroenterology and endoscopy of the digestive system in small and large animals.
Day 2: Management of gastroenteric diseases/endoscopic examinations in small and large animals admitted to or referred to the Gastroenterology, Pulmonology, and Endoscopy Service of OVUD.
Day 3: Management of gastroenteric diseases/endoscopic examinations in large animals at livestock farms.
Day 4: Journal Club – discussion of articles related to gastroenterology and endoscopy applied to small and large animals.
Day 5: Learning assessment. - Other information
- The course includes additional activities with Dr. Giulia Maggi and Dr. Maria Cicogna.
- Learning verification modality
- Final discussion with students through the preparation of a PowerPoint presentation on a gastroenteric disease of their choice, including references to the articles discussed, the diagnostic methods applied, and any clinical cases observed during the previous days.
- Extended program
- The ADE includes practical activities focused on certain gastroenteric diseases in both small and large animals, with particular emphasis on those requiring endoscopic examination as part of the diagnostic process.
These activities will take place either on small and large animals admitted to or referred to the Gastroenterology, Pulmonology, and Endoscopy Service of the OVUD, or at livestock farms.
