Contents General principles of Pharmacology. Pharmacodynamics: drug receptors and receptors/mechanisms. Pharmacokinetics: disposition and metabolisms of drugs. Drug development, evaluation of new drugs and principles of therapeutics. Pharmacology for special patient populations.
Reference texts R. Paoletti, S. Nicosia, F Clementi, G. Fumagalli - Farmacologia generale e molecolare. Moreover, the presentations used during the class are available to the student and can be downloaded from Unistudium. Appropriate learning pathways, materials, and assessment methods are available to meet the needs of students with disabilities and/or specific learning disorders (SLD).
Educational objectives The General Pharmacology module aims to provide students with the fundamental knowledge of the principles governing the interaction between drugs and the organism, with particular emphasis on the mechanisms underlying pharmacological action, the dose–effect relationship, and the processes that determine the efficacy and safety of treatments.
The study of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles will enable students to understand the fate of drugs in the organism, the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying pharmacological effects, and the main parameters used for the evaluation of drug activity. These skills are closely related to the professional role of the Biomedical Laboratory Scientist, who operates in the fields of diagnostics and biomedical research, contributing to the correct execution, interpretation, and evaluation of analytical and experimental procedures, including those related to the study of drugs and their biological effects. In particular, students will acquire knowledge of: drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination; routes of administration, bioavailability, and bioequivalence; pharmacological receptors, receptor activation theories, and signal transduction mechanisms; dose–response relationships, pharmacological efficacy, and toxic effects.
At the end of the module, students will be able to:
understand the main mechanisms of drug action and their relationship with the molecular targets involved; interpret the main pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic parameters; correlate drug dose with pharmacological response; apply general pharmacology knowledge to the understanding of laboratory methods related to the study of drugs and their biological effects.
Prerequisites The student must have knowledge of anatomy, physiology and general pathology. The student must also comply with the required prerequisite.
Teaching methods Lectures on all the topics of the course. Appropriate learning pathways, materials, and assessment methods are available to meet the needs of students with disabilities and/or specific learning disorders (SLD).
Other information For further information or to arrange an appointment, please contact the Professor at maria.pallotta@unipg.it
Learning verification modality The examination consists of an oral exam lasting approximately 15 minutes, during which candidates will be asked two questions: one on pharmacokinetics and one on pharmacodynamics. The test is aimed at ascertaining the level of knowledge and understanding get by the student on the the course program. Through the oral test, the teacher will also verify the language skills and student's ability to organize the argument. Appropriate learning pathways, materials, and assessment methods are available to meet the needs of students with disabilities and/or specific learning disorders (SLD).
Extended program Definition of drug. Features of the conventional drug. Natural and synthetic drugs. Biodrugs and biotechnological drugs. Primary, side, unwanted and toxic effects. Cellular basis of pharmacokinetics (cell barriers and drug transport across membranes). Absorption and routes of drug administration. Distribution, metabolism and elimination of drugs. Interaction between drugs. Pharmacodynamics: receptors and receptor activation theories. Definition of agonist, antagonist and allosteric modulator. Methods to study the biological responses of a drug, dose-response curves, potency and efficacy of a drug. Binding studies and definition of drug affinity. Classes of receptors (G-protein coupled receptor, ionic receptor, receptor associated with an enzymatic activity, intracellular receptor). Mechanisms of signal transduction
