Educational objectives
The primary objective of this course is to provide students with the fundamental knowledge required to study the major human diseases, with particular emphasis on diseases of the oral cavity. Special attention will be devoted to the differential diagnosis of clinically evident lesions. By the end of the course, students will be expected to correlate pathological and clinical findings and to formulate appropriate differential diagnostic hypotheses to be investigated by the pathologist through biopsy and cytological examinations
Prerequisites
Students are expected to possess a solid background in Human Anatomy, Histology, Biology, Physiology, and General Pathology in order to understand the etiological, pathogenetic, and morphological basis of the major human diseases, as well as their clinicopathological correlations and the principles of differential diagnosis
Teaching methods
Face-to-face lectures.
Attendance in the Surgical Pathology grossing room, with observation of the procedures for the gross examination and tissue sampling of surgical specimens affected by neoplastic and inflammatory diseases.
Classroom discussion of autopsy findings, with emphasis on clinicopathological correlations.
Guided light microscopic examination of cytological and histological specimens illustrating the major human diseases and diseases of the oral cavity.
Learning activities, teaching materials, and assessment methods will be adapted, where appropriate, to meet the needs of students with disabilities and/or specific learning disorders (SLD)

Office hours: Tuesday 16-18 (by appointment), also via video call mode on the Teams platform.

Learning verification modality
The assessment consists of an oral examination lasting approximately 30 minutes and comprising three questions. Two questions will cover the general section of the course, focusing on topics in Systemic Pathology, while the third question will address the special section, specifically diseases of the oral cavity.
The purpose of the oral examination is to assess students’ knowledge and understanding of the theoretical topics covered in the course, as well as their ability to communicate effectively using appropriate scientific terminology, establish clinicopathological correlations, and formulate differential diagnostic hypotheses.
Where appropriate, alternative assessment arrangements, materials, and/or assessment methods will be provided to meet the needs of students with disabilities and/or specific learning disorders (SLD).
