- American Literature of the Nineteenth Century
The course will examine American literary production in the nineteenth century through the works of some of its most significant authors, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, and Henry James. Particular attention will be paid to their relationship with history, society, politics, and religion, as well as to the main themes and formal and stylistic innovations of their works.
The course will be conducted primarily in a seminar format and will therefore require students’ active participation. - Reference texts
- Emerson, Essays; Whitman, Leaves of Grass; Dickinson, Poems and Letters; James, The Portrait of a Lady. A selection of critical texts will be provided throughout the course and uploaded to the Unistudium platform.
- Educational objectives
- By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to:
1.interpret literary texts in relation to their historical, social, and cultural context;
2.translate primary texts and provide formal and critical analyses of them;
3.effectively communicate the knowledge acquired, demonstrating coherent argumentation and an appropriate critical vocabulary. - Prerequisites
- Knowledge of the basic notions related to the analysis of literary texts.

- Lectures and seminars.
- Learning verification modality
- Oral exam. The exam will consist of an interview on the texts and topics covered in the course, aimed at verifying 1. the understanding of texts and their contexts; 2. the ability to apply the knowledge covered by the course; 3. the ability to expose and communicate what has been acquired with clarity and appropriate critical language.
