Contents Brief history of industrial catalysis. Basic aspects of catalysis: (1) kinetic principles; (2) types of chemical bonds and elementary stages related to molecular complexes and surfaces. Heterogeneous catalysis. Homogeneous catalysis. Catalysis in natural and artificial photosynthetic processes.
Reference texts R. A.vanSanten, P. W. N. M.vanLeeuwen, J. A.Moulijn, B. A. Averill, Catalysis: an Integrated Approach, Elsevier, 2000.
Educational objectives Mastery of the topics covered. Students are expected to be able to critically analyze the operation of catalytic systems of industrial interest, operating in both homogeneous and heterogeneous phases, addressed during the course based on structural and mechanistic considerations.
Prerequisites Basic knowledge of general and inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry.
Teaching methods Lectures on all course topics.
Other information
Learning verification modality Oral exam (approximately 40 minutes) to verify that students are able to critically analyze the operation of catalytic systems of industrial interest, operating in both homogeneous and heterogeneous phases, addressed during the course based on structural and mechanistic considerations.
Extended program Brief history of industrial catalysis: (1) relationship between raw material availability and catalyst development; (2) selected examples of currently used industrial catalytic processes. Basic aspects of catalysis: (1) kinetic principles; (2) types of chemical bonds and elementary stages related to molecular complexes and surfaces. Heterogeneous catalysis: mechanistic aspects of synthesis gas conversion reactions, hydrogenation reactions, oxidation reactions, and reactions for automotive exhaust gas purification. Homogeneous catalysis: hydrogen production reactions from water (water splitting) and biomass, catalysis in natural and artificial photosynthetic processes (NADH regeneration).
