Contents General Pharmacology Module

General principles of pharmacology. Pharmacokinetics: drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination. Pharmacodynamics: mechanisms of drug action, pharmacological receptors, dose-response relationship, efficacy, and toxicity. Routes of administration and factors affecting drug response. Adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, and principles of pharmacovigilance.

Pharmacotherapy Module

General principles of pharmacotherapy. Drugs used in major cardiovascular, respiratory, inflammatory, and pain-related diseases. Drugs acting on the central and peripheral nervous systems. Antimicrobial agents: antibiotics and principles of anti-infective therapy. Contrast agents used in diagnostic imaging: classification, mechanisms of action, indications, contraindications, adverse reactions, and risk management. Drugs used in radiology and radiotherapy, including supportive drugs and radiopharmaceuticals. Principles of safety, appropriateness, and patient management in radiological settings.

Educational objectives The course aims to provide students with the fundamental knowledge of general pharmacology and pharmacotherapy required to understand the clinical use of drugs and their application in diagnostic imaging and radiological therapy.

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

understand the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics;
know the main mechanisms of drug action and their clinical applications;
describe the major classes of drugs used in clinical practice;
understand indications, contraindications, adverse effects, and drug interactions relevant to professional practice;
understand the use of contrast agents and drugs employed in diagnostic imaging and radiotherapy;
recognize and contribute to the management of the main adverse reactions to drugs and contrast media;
acquire knowledge of the principles of safety, therapeutic appropriateness, and pharmacovigilance;
integrate pharmacological knowledge with the professional practice of medical radiology technicians.
Prerequisites Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, biology, and general pathology is required.
Teaching methods The course consists of lectures supported by multimedia teaching materials (slides, diagrams, and supplementary materials). During the lectures, practical examples related to the clinical use of drugs, contrast agents, and radiopharmaceuticals in diagnostic and therapeutic settings will be discussed.

Teaching activities will promote the integration of pharmacological knowledge with the professional and operational aspects of medical radiology practice, with particular attention to patient safety, management of adverse reactions, and appropriate use of drugs.

Learning verification modality Learning assessment will be carried out through an oral examination aimed at evaluating the knowledge of the fundamental principles of general pharmacology and pharmacotherapy, the understanding of the clinical use of drugs and contrast agents, and the ability to use appropriate scientific terminology.

Assessment will take into account the knowledge of drug mechanisms of action, therapeutic indications, adverse effects, and safety aspects relevant to the professional practice of medical radiology technicians.
Extended program General Pharmacology Module

Introduction to pharmacology.
Definition of drugs and classification of medicinal products. Principles of pharmacokinetics: drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination. Bioavailability and half-life. Routes of drug administration.

Pharmacodynamics.
Pharmacological receptors and mechanisms of drug action. Dose-response relationship. Agonists and antagonists. Therapeutic index, efficacy, and toxicity.

Drug safety.
Adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, and principles of pharmacovigilance. Appropriate drug use and patient safety.

Pharmacotherapy Module

General principles of pharmacotherapy.
Selection of pharmacological treatment, benefit/risk ratio, therapeutic appropriateness, and treatment adherence.

Cardiovascular drugs.
Main antihypertensive, antianginal, antiarrhythmic, and anticoagulant drugs. Therapeutic indications and adverse effects.

Respiratory drugs.
Bronchodilators, corticosteroids, and drugs used in major respiratory diseases.

Anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), corticosteroids, opioid and non-opioid analgesics. Clinical indications and adverse effects.

Drugs acting on the nervous system.
Anxiolytics, sedatives, antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anesthetics. Main pharmacological effects and adverse reactions.

Anti-infective chemotherapy.
General principles of antimicrobial therapy. Main classes of antibiotics and issues related to antibiotic resistance.

Contrast agents.
Classification of contrast agents used in diagnostic imaging. Iodinated and paramagnetic contrast media. Indications, contraindications, toxicity, and management of adverse reactions.

Drugs and radiopharmaceuticals in radiology and radiotherapy.
General principles of radiopharmaceuticals. Drugs used in the preparation and management of patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Supportive drugs used in radiotherapy.

Safety and patient management.
Prevention and management of adverse reactions to drugs and contrast agents. Principles of safety, patient monitoring, and interdisciplinary collaboration in radiological settings.

Educational objectives Basic knowledge of general pathology aspects, of tumors diagnostics and
therapies.
Prerequisites Notions on the tumors characteristics, on the modality of prevention and
early diagnosis, on the diagnostic tests and on therapies (from surgery to
radiotherapy, from hormonotherapy to target therapies and to
immunotherapy) including supportive therapies and palliative care with
the objective to have a wide panorama of the medical oncology.

Extended program Cancer definition (difference between normal and neoplastic cells, cancer
metastases, tumors classification, grades and stages of tumors);
epidemiology and risk factors; primary prevention in the general
population and in patients at risk; secondary prevention: screening tests;
tumor diagnosis and TMN stadiation; principles of locoregional therapy
(surgery and radiotherapy); general concepts of systemic anti-tumor
therapy with reference to chemotherapy, hormone therapy, molecular
target therapy, immunotherapy.
Main organ toxicities of systemic therapies and their management with
particular reference to bone marrow toxicity, gastrointestinal toxicity,
skin toxicity; cardiotoxicity, pulmonary and neurological toxicity,
autoimmune toxicity during immunotherapy. Oncological emergencies
(superior vena cava syndrome, spinal cord compression, brain
metastases, hypercalcemia, hyponatremia), infectious emergencies and
septic shock, metabolic syndromes. Treatment of neoplastic pain in
oncological patients.

Educational objectives The main objective of the course is to provide students with knowledge and skills concerning human mechanisms and reactions when faced with a disease diagnosis.
Prerequisites To understand the planning and evaluation of psychological interventions, it is advisable to have a basic knowledge of
the biomedical model of health.
Furthermore, it is advisable to be able to read and comprehend scientific articles in English.
Teaching methods The lectures will take place as face-to-face lecture for most of the arguments. Student’s active interaction is welcome.
