- The course provides fundamental knowledge of the physical, chemical and biological properties of soils, with particular emphasis on the processes governing the fate of contaminants in terrestrial environments. The behavior of organic and inorganic contaminants in soils, as well as adsorption, mobility and leaching processes towards groundwater, will be examined in detail, together with the regulatory framework for the management and remediation of contaminated sites. Basic principles of groundwater remediation will also be introduced. Finally, the main remediation technologies for contaminated soils will be presented, with particular focus on chemical, physical and biological treatments.

- The course provides the theoretical and practical knowledge required to understand the processes governing the behavior of contaminants in soils and related environmental compartments. The main learning outcomes include knowledge of soil formation and the physical, chemical and biological properties of soils, the mechanisms controlling contaminant adsorption, mobility and bioavailability, and the characteristics of the main organic and inorganic pollutants found in contaminated sites. The course will also provide the basic principles for the analytical characterization of contaminated soils and for the determination of the concentration of major contaminants. Particular attention will be devoted to contaminant fate, the risk of aquifer contamination, the national and European regulatory framework concerning contaminated sites, and the principles underlying the main remediation technologies. Finally, the course will provide the tools required to critically evaluate and select the most appropriate remediation strategies for contaminated soils and aquifers according to site characteristics and contaminant properties.
- Prerequisites
- Although no formal prerequisites are required, basic knowledge of General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry is recommended.
- Teaching methods
- Lectures supported by electronic teaching material, complemented by classroom and laboratory exercises. The course may also include case-study discussions and seminars on specific topics.
- Other information
- Office venue: Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Via G. Duranti, 93, Perugia.
Office hours are by appointment, to be arranged via e-mail.

- Assessment will be based on an oral examination. The examination is designed to assess the level of knowledge acquired on the topics covered during the course.
- Extended program
- Soil formation and the main physical, chemical and biological soil properties. Mineral and organic soil components. Soil colloids and soil retention capacity towards contaminants. Adsorption and desorption processes. Bioavailability, mobility, persistence and the main parameters governing contaminant environmental fate. Mobility and degradation of organic compounds in soil. Inorganic contaminants: heavy metals, sources of contamination, environmental behavior, bioavailability, toxicity and risk of leaching towards aquifers. Organic contaminants: petroleum-derived compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), chlorinated solvents, pesticides, dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other persistent pollutants. Environmental fate, transport and degradation of organic and inorganic contaminants in soils and groundwater. National and European legislation concerning contaminated sites. Environmental site characterization, site safety measures and remediation procedures. Remediation technologies for contaminated soils and aquifers, including chemical and physical treatments such as soil washing, soil flushing, electrokinetic extraction, solidification/stabilization using cementitious binders, chemical oxidation and reduction; physical and thermal treatments such as soil vapor extraction, steam extraction and thermal destruction; and biological treatments (bioremediation), including bioventing, biosparging, biopile, landfarming, bioslurry and phytoremediation. Comparative evaluation of remediation technologies, selection criteria for remediation strategies and discussion of case studies.
