- Erasmus students are welcome to attend the lectures. Reference materials and readings are also available in English. International students may choose to take the exam in either Italian or English.
- Contents
- Divided into three main sections, the course explores the major transformations in demographic patterns associated with demographic transitions. Lectures will analyze the role of population policies as a driver of development in poorer countries, as well as the function of international migration in rebalancing differential demographic pressures globally. Ample space will be dedicated to recent trends in Italian demography and the key impact of immigration on current social, economic, and political scenarios in Italy and Europe. Finally, the course will delve into the complex interactions between demographic behavior, socio-economic inequalities, international conflicts, health, and sustainable development, featuring a comparative analysis between European and non-European countries.

- Students will acquire the tools to understand demographic trends in rich and poor countries, identifying the interrelations among demographic, economic, and social phenomena. They will also be able to interpret data correctly, demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills, and show a clear understanding of population policies and the role of migration, integrating the analysis of highly complex phenomena.
- Prerequisites
- A basic understanding of the main demographic analysis measures is highly important, though a quick review will be covered at the start of the course.

- The examination consists of a final oral exam, based on an interview covering the topics discussed in class and explored in the recommended textbooks.
The objective is to assess the student's level of knowledge, synthesis, and comprehension skills, as well as their ability to make connections between the different topics of the course. The interview will also verify the student's ability to communicate the acquired skills methodically, with appropriate terminology and clarity of expression. The duration of the exam may vary.

- "The course is divided into three parts:
Part One: Space and strategies of demographic growth. General patterns of world population. Demographic development between choice and constraint. Contemporary demography toward order and efficiency. Demographic growth and economic development. Evolutionary trends and future prospects of the Italian and European populations. Demographic dynamics in developing countries, analyzing their evolution from 1950 to the present. A focus on the two demographic giants, China and India, versus the demographic decline in the states of the former Soviet Union.
Part Two: Demographic policies and population policies. The role of United Nations International Conferences. The Cairo International Conference on Population and Development (1994), its Programme of Action, and subsequent reviews. The implementation of population policies. Human development indicators. Future world population scenarios according to recent UN projections. The sustainability of demographic development.
Part Three: International migration: definitions, sources, and limitations. International migration in the past: major global migratory flows, with specific reference to Italian emigration over the last century. Recent shifts in international migratory flows, analyzing the delicate link between migration and development, the phenomenon of irregular entry, and the impact of economic crises. Contemporary European dynamics and European Union migration policies. Italy in the new global migration scenario: foreign immigration within the national territory will be examined through statistical sources to understand its evolutionary trends, policy responses, and future prospects. - Obiettivi Agenda 2030 per lo sviluppo sostenibile
