UniPg hosts the ARTEMIS Pinnacle Summit: two days in Perugia dedicated to “Open Borders” and European academic cooperation

The ARTEMIS Pinnacle Summit and Non-Conference 2026 opened this morning at the University of Perugia and will continue until 30 June. The international event is promoted within the framework of the ARTEMIS European University Alliance and organised by the University of Perugia in partnership with the University of Ioannina, Greece.

Entitled “Open Borders – Spaces We Share, Spaces of Care”, the initiative brings together in Perugia institutional representatives, faculty members, doctoral candidates, early-career researchers and scholars from the partner universities of the Alliance. Its aim is to explore, from an interdisciplinary perspective, the concept of “border” as a cultural, social, political and technological threshold, while strengthening scientific and academic cooperation among the universities involved.

The opening day was attended by the Rector of the University of Perugia, Professor Massimiliano Marianelli, confirming the University’s strategic commitment to internationalisation, European cooperation and the enhancement of transnational university networks.

“Welcoming you to Perugia means, for us, opening a shared space: a space of relations, of connections, of encounters that arise when people come together across disciplines, cultures and borders,” the Rector said in his address. “The theme ‘Open Borders’ resonates deeply with this vision, because it invites us to look at borders not only as lines of separation, but as thresholds, and at the bridges that allow us to cross them. The University of Perugia is the promoter and signatory of the Charter of Assisi – Universities as Bridges of Peace: a commitment to being builders of bridges, not walls, and to contributing to a culture of peace through education, dialogue and responsibility. In this light, ‘Open Borders’ is not only an academic theme, but an ethical stance. Borders, when approached with curiosity, responsibility and openness, become places of encounter, exchange and shared discovery, within the space of relations that is the international scientific community. The borders that matter most, after all, are not those drawn on maps, but those between disciplines, cultures and people who have not yet had the opportunity to meet. Today we are here to cross them together.”

A perspective that, like the commitment to peace that characterises the University’s vision, embraces the full spectrum of knowledge — across the humanities, social sciences, science, technology, medicine and the environment — in full alignment with the interdisciplinary nature of the ARTEMIS Pinnacle Summit.

The Summit is part of the development pathway of the ARTEMIS European University Alliance, a European university alliance bringing together eight institutions committed to transnational cooperation, research and innovation. In addition to the University of Perugia and the University of Ioannina, the Alliance includes Université Clermont Auvergne in France, Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg in Germany, Katholieke Hogeschool VIVES in Belgium, Høgskulen på Vestlandet in Norway, Ovidius University of Constanța in Romania and Tallinna Tehnikakõrgkool in Estonia.

“Hosting the Pinnacle Summit of the ARTEMIS European Alliance represents an important opportunity for the University of Perugia to reaffirm its commitment to building a European knowledge area founded on cooperation, inclusion and research excellence,” said Professor Diana Salciarini, Rector’s Delegate for International Relations and Internationalisation at the University of Perugia. “The chosen theme, Open Borders, fully reflects both the mission of ARTEMIS and the vision of our University: overcoming not only geographical borders, but also disciplinary, cultural and social ones, in order to promote new forms of dialogue and innovation. In this sense, the Summit provides a valuable setting for interdisciplinary exchange among scholars from numerous disciplinary fields, fostering the development of new scientific and project-based collaborations. Alongside the Summit, the Non-Conference will involve 60 doctoral candidates from all eight partner universities of the Alliance, who will engage in a collaborative and interdisciplinary format designed to enhance dialogue, teamwork and the creation of new European research networks. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Professor Paolo Belardi and the WP4 Research Pathways working group for the high scientific profile of the programme, developed together with colleagues from the University of Ioannina, and to the International Relations Office for its essential daily contribution to the development of the ARTEMIS Alliance. These achievements are the result of a collective effort involving the entire academic community and further strengthening the international role of our University.”

In the afternoon, following a second keynote lecture, the programme continues with further scientific contributions and with the ARTEMIS Research Pathways Panel & Research Centers Townhall, dedicated to the Alliance’s research pathways, research centres and projects of particular relevance to ARTEMIS. The day will conclude with closing remarks and an introduction to the following day’s Non-Conference.

Tomorrow, Tuesday 30 June, the Summit will continue with the Non-Conference “Spaces We Share, Spaces of Care”, hosted at Palazzo Grossi, home of the Department of Philosophy, Social Sciences, Humanities and Education. The Non-Conference adopts a collaborative and interactive format designed to foster teamwork, leadership, soft skills and interdisciplinary dialogue through case-based discussions and working tables.

The activities will be organised around three thematic pillars: Technology & Transport, with working tables inspired by Luisa Spagnoli, visionary entrepreneur and founder of Perugina, and Gerardo Dottori, a leading exponent of Italian Futurism; Health & Environment, with working tables dedicated to Alessandro Pascoli, physician and pioneer of modern medical teaching, and Pietro Vannucci, known as Il Perugino, master of Renaissance painting; and Migration & Human Rights, with working tables inspired by Galeazzo Alessi, influential Renaissance architect, and Aldo Capitini, philosopher, educator and prominent figure in pacifist and non-violent thought.

The arrival of participants was preceded on Sunday, 28 June, by a welcome event and an opportunity to discover the city of Perugia, with a guided tour of the historic centre through some of its most emblematic sites, including Rocca Paolina, Corso Vannucci, Piazza IV Novembre, the Fontana Maggiore, the Cathedral, the Sala dei Notari and the Etruscan Well. For participants extending their stay, an optional cultural visit dedicated to the history of Perugina and the celebrated Baci chocolates is also scheduled for Wednesday, 1 July, with an itinerary through places connected to Luisa Spagnoli and Giovanni Buitoni.
